Cycling

Across the UK cycling continues to grow in popularity and we all know the benefits; it's cheap, great for the environment and really is good for you.

The University of Manchester has a large (and rapidly increasing) staff and student cycling community too. There are a range of facilities and incentives to support you as a current or potential cyclist:

  • Cycle parking: The University has capacity for over 2,500 cycles across both campuses and residences. Please see the document on the right for cycle shelter locations at residences
  • Showers: please see the list to the right
  • Cycle to work scheme (staff only): significant savings to staff who wish to purchase a bike and/or equipment
  • Monthly events and buddy scheme (staff only): held on the first Wednesday of every month
  • Bike User Group (UMBUG – staff and postgrads only)
  • Biko Bikes student bike hire for £1 a week (students only)
  • Get On Your Bike campaign to encourage student cycling at the University (students only)
  • Free cycle training and bike maintenance sessions
  • Subsidised bike locks and bike marking by Security Services
  • Pedalers on campus repairs and second hand bikes. Repairs carried out at low prices and second hand bikes to buy. Harry can be found every Thursday on North Campus outside Harry's Bar, Barnes Wallis 10am-2pm and at the side of the Sir Joseph Whitworth Pub (opposite Trof bar) near Owens Park every Friday 10am-2pm
  • The Market Place is a good source of second hand bikes at the University
  • Cycle mileage rate of 20 pence per mile for business journeys
  • There are four cycle repair stands across campus for use by students and staff. These are located at the following buildings: Manchester Meeting Place (+ Rapid Pump), The Roscoe Building, behind the Students' Union (+ Rapid Pump) and at University Place
