The simplest form of travel is often overlooked and undervalued – walking is free, good for your health, good for the environment and a great way to get to know places better. For all these reasons and more it’s worth considering whether you could walk to work (even if only occasionally), add more walking to a longer commute or walk to meetings (north to south campus is ideal, being only around 1 mile apart, so around a 20 minute stroll). There’s even guided lunchtime walks at the University 4 days a week! (See below).

There’s a host of great information walking available online, so to help you to take to two-feet, here’s some useful pointers:

Planning a route

There’s often a faster, more pleasant walking route than the usual transport option. Walk it has a Manchester section and as well as route planning provides information on steps, calories and CO2 saved. Google maps is a great way to plan journeys and even has a handy walking option (just click the walking figure!).

Greater Manchester walking information

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has put together some really useful information on walking. Here you’ll find a host of information on local walks, events and useful pointers. There’s even a short film highlighting a study showing that 20 minutes brisk walking a day can add up to 7 years to your life.

As well as with TfGM, the University has also worked alongside Living Streets, the UK’s pedestrian charity since 1929. You can find out more about their work here.

Lunchtime Strollers

The University of Manchester Walking Programme, Lunchtime Strollers, is accredited by Walking for Health (a collaboration between Macmillan Cancer Support and the Ramblers).

The Lunchtime Strollers take regular guided walks (usually Tuesday to Friday), setting off from both north and south campus. The walks are a great way to get out, get active and meet new people.

You can download a programme using the link in the right-hand column, which highlights the different types of walks available each week.
