New build
The new £61m National Graphene Institute (NGI) will provide a state of the art facility to produce the applications of the future using this revolutionary material allowing graphene scientists from the University to collaborate with their colleagues from industry and other UK universities.
Comprising of more than 7,800m² of accommodation over five levels, it includes two cleanrooms, a number of heavily-serviced research laboratories, and office accommodation as well as social and seminar space; the latter opening up onto a roof terrace. A five-storey central utility building, structurally separate from the main building, will house all plant and equipment necessary for the building to operate.
The Institute is jointly funded by Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and European Regional Development Fund.
Work began on site in June 2013 with the construction of the five-metre deep lower ground floor. The main works are to commence in August 2013 with practical completion by the end of 2014 with the building due to be fully operational by March 2015.
