Permit to Work

To ensure safe working and to control significant risks the University of Manchester operates a permit to work and a permit to access system.

Permits are required for work which is undertaken in the following categories;

  • Access into and work within confined spaces
  • Access onto and work upon roofs
  • Access into vacant premises and unallocated space
  • Access into and work within plant rooms, switch rooms, boiler rooms, lift motor rooms
  • Excavations
  • Work on fire alarm systems and detection
  • Electrical isolations (low voltage distribution systems)
  • Asbestos works and Asbestos contaminated areas
  • Hot work (use of naked flames, abrasive cutting, electric arc welding, hot soldering)
  • Cold work (cryogenics and working with refrigerants)
  • Radioactive contamination
  • Work on High Pressure Systems (steam and compressed air)
  • Work on Natural Gas System (N.B. must include i) RAMS, ii) Gas Safe gas contractor's Business/Company Business Registration Number, iii) Gas Safe gas engineer's gas safety card number iv) Gas Safe engineer's certificates of competency -- OTHERWISE THE PERMIT WILL NOT BE AUTHORISED.)

This policy applies to all work undertaken in such spaces as described above by University staff, contractors, and all other persons who are required to access such areas or undertake work in these spaces. Please follow the link below to access the Permit System.
