Campus Cleansing Unit

The Campus Cleansing Unit (CCU) currently consists of 16 staff who are managed by the University Waste Co-ordinator.

The unit is responsible for ensuring compliance with The Environmental Protection Act 1990 and its regulations regarding litter and refuse collection across the main campus. They are also responsible for the collection of various recyclates from academic buildings and the emptying of external waste/recycling bins and cigarette posts.

The unit undertakes a wide range of duties in addition to those above including:

  • External manual and mechanical cleaning/sweeping of the main campus
  • Collection and disposal of syringes and other drug paraphernalia
  • Cleaning of University signage, pressure washing, graffiti and fly poster removal
  • Removal and disposal of biological waste deposits and dead animals
  • Seasonal leaf collection in conjunction with the Landscape Services staff
  • Collection of redundant furniture and return of items to the University's furniture store
  • Collection/disposal/recycling of electrical equipment (WEEE) and items such as fridges and freezers
  • Collection/disposal/recycling of bulky items (including wood, pallets, packaging) and other items on request
  • Collection of metals, glass products, shoes, paper, magazines, clothing and polystyrene for subsequent recycling
  • Cleaning of bin stores and bike shed areas including the removal/disposal/recycling of abandoned bikes and bike locks/chains
  • Grit spreading and snow clearance in conjunction with Landscape Services staff

The CCU 24 hour answer-phone receives approximately 2000—2500 requests per annum which are actioned in addition to pre-planned maintenance regimes already in place.
