Waste arrangements at Dalton Cumbrian Facility

Different waste arrangements are in place at the Dalton Cumbrian Facility in West Cumbria. This is due to its location and the availability of waste contractors in that area.

As of August 2020 waste collections have been carried out by Cumberland Council (formerley Copeland BC until their merger in April 2023).

All waste is collected together and sent to Distington waste transfer station to be bulked up before being sent to a Mechanical and Biological Treatment (MBT) plant in Carlisle, operated by Renewi UK Services. For more information on the process at this facility see here.

Most outputs from the Renewi MBT plant are sent for further processing to make fuel for cement kilns. Other outputs from the plant are processed to extract aggregates and metals, and to produce a compost-like material for land restoration.

The waste facilities concerned are detailed in the Copeland BC waste register (see Useful Documents box to the right of this page).
